Galway deputy renews call for supports to help people buy and renovate derelict homes

Galway Bay FM Newsroom – Local TD Sean Canney is renewing his call for the Government to support people in buying and renovating derelict homes.

The Galway East TD has long argued that these supports are a crucial aspect to easing the housing crisis.

Speaking in the Dáil, he highlighted how there’s around 44 thousand derelict homes in the wider North-West region.

Deputy Canney argued it’s time for the Housing Minister to take firm action rather than saying we cannot do this and we cannot do that.

Forum Connemara named as one of seven new applicants to the Community Services Programme

Galway Bay FM Newsroom – Forum Connemara in Letterfrack has been named as one of seven new Applicants to the Community Services Programme by Joe O’Brien, Minister of State at the Department of Rural and Community Development.

Seven organisations based in Monaghan, Dublin, Cavan, Galway, Tipperary, Donegal and Limerick are entering onto the programme and funding is being provided by the Department of Rural and Community Development towards the costs of six Managers and 15 Full Time Equivalent (FTE) positions across these organisations.

Forum Connemara supports the management and operation of Diamond Hill Community Sports Centre, a community sports and recreational facility in the disadvantaged area of Letterfrack.

The Centre comprises of a community and an astro-turf pitch, shower and changing facilities, a gym, a therapy and meeting room, an office and a kitchenette.

Speaking following the announcement, Minister O’Brien said he was delighted to be in a position to announce these new applicants to the Community Service Programme, and to extend the capacity of the CSP to deliver vital services to those most vulnerable in our communities.

He added that he wanted to commend all organisations funded under the CSP on their important work in serving our communities and he looked forward to seeing the impact of the positions funded by CSP in these seven organisations.

Galway Bay FM Newsroom – A Galway East TD is calling for a “root and branch review” of the Rural Social Scheme.

The scheme provides supplemantary income for low-income farmers and fishermen or women.

Independent TD Sean Canney, says the eligibility criteria and the income threshold for participants needs to be updated, and the 6 year time limit of participation in the scheme needs to be abolished.

Plan lodged for telecommunications infrastructure in Corrandulla

Galway Bay FM Newsroom – An application has been lodged to erect new telecommunications infrastructure in Corrandulla.

It’s led by On Tower Ireland Limited.

The plan would see the construction of a 30 metre multi-user lattice telecommunications structure with headframe.

This would carry antenna and dishes enclosed within a 2.4-metre palisade fence compound.

County planners are due to issue a decision in July
