A Galway husband and wife team with over a century of service between them to the Irish Red Cross have been deservedly honoured at the charity’s Annual Volunteer Awards.
The presentation of Lifetime Achievement Award to Deirdre and Brian Madden is entirely fitting – given the extraordinary length of their commitment to the cause.
Deirdre Madden joined the Irish Red Cross in 1969, dedicating 55 years to community service.
And Brian – with over 53 years of service – has been a cornerstone of the Galway Branch and the broader Irish Red Cross community.
That means that between them they have dedicated over a century of combined service to the Irish Red Cross, exemplifying the spirit of community, compassion, and resilience.
As a Community Support Officer, Deirdre Madden has played an invaluable role in patient transfers, hospital support, and community aid distribution, often collaborating with organizations like SVP and COPE.
In addition to her community work, Deirdre has supported Red Cross training efforts, assisting with courses, practicals and equipment maintenance.
A nomination for this award highlighted her strength and dedication, continuing to serve her community despite the challenges of early-onset dementia.
Deirdre’s contributions extend beyond her personal efforts, inspiring her family’s deep involvement in the Irish Red Cross and leaving a legacy of selflessness and care.
Over his 53 years of service, Brian Madden has held every officer position in his branch and area; he currently serves as Area Community Officer and is a Red Cross Tutor and PHECC-registered EMT.
Among his many achievements, Brian established rural branches to expand the organisation’s reach, spearheaded the acquisition of new premises in collaboration with Mountain Rescue, and continues to lead the Galway Community Services Team.
