Skehana Menlough 2-16
Westport 3-11
SKEHANA Menlough ended a 20-year wait by claiming the Connacht Junior B camogie title at Westport’s expense in Bekan.
On a cold and wintry afternoon, the unbeaten Galway champions had to go to extra time before sealing their return to Junior A ranks for 2025.
Having first use of the wind in the opening 30 minutes, Skehana Menlough made the elements tell by leading 2-10 to 1-1 at the interval.
They had the opening points from Jacqueline and Claire Glynn, with Clodagh Jordan and Ruth Ownes also on the mark.
A cracker of a goal from Lauryn McHugh was followed by two further points from Jacqueline Glynn as Skehana Menlough built up a commanding 1-9 to 0-1 lead.
By the interval, thanks to another Glynn green flag and a Jordan point, the Galway team were well in control on a 2-10 to 1-1 scoreline.
But with the wind now behind them, Westport fought back and actually took the lead late on only for a Jacqueline Glynn free to force extra time.
It was nip and tuck in the additional 20 minutes but points from Lauryn McHugh, and Jacqueline and Claire Glynn, swung the tide in Skehana Menlough’s favour to cue great scenes of celebration.
Aoife Jordan accepted the Connacht Cup on behalf of the team, with Aoife Jordan named the Player of the Match as Skehana Menlough completed the clean sweep of county league and championship and Connacht titles during a 12-match unbeaten run.
