Aged thirteen, Dara Fuller must be one of Galway’s youngest entrepreneurs.
A love of hens and a yearning to earn more pocket money spurred the Sixth Class pupil of Scoil Éinde in Salthill to set-up an egg business in June of last year when he was just twelve.
The idea came to him while on holidays in North Kerry with his parents Claire and Declan, and sisters Róisín, Clodagh and Niamh.
Heading towards Lixnaw, between Listowel and Tralee, they drove by a farm selling eggs with an honesty box.
“I remember only having five Euros in my wallet, so I thought it would be a good way to make money and also to have my own animals and learn about them. When we came back, I spent ages researching, because I jokingly said I could make a business out of it,” he said.
And so Deez Eggz was born. He purchased three hens on Done Deal from Martin’s Poultry, a farm near Loughrea; and bought a coop to house them in the back garden of his Knocknacarra home.
He’s since added a larger coop to cater for four more hens, which he has come to know and love.
Karen and Sinéad are two ‘bullies’ and lay the biggest eggs; Quandale, is the kindest and friendliest; Sandy, is a white hen and lays white eggs; Beatrice is black and brown; Nora and Agnes, are two new hens he bought last month.
