A fishing village is rocked by the inexplicable disappearance of a family-owned trawler in An Fear Liath, the outdoor show from Fibín sa Taibhdhearc for this year’s Arts Festival.
Being staged at the City’s Claddagh Basin on July 25, 26 and 27, at 10pm nightly, An Fear LIath was written by Philip Doherty and was adapted by Fran Núnez, who also directs.
In the show, presented in association with Galician National Theatre/ Centro Dramático Galego, and Tryater from Friesland, the family’s oldest daughter, Joan, returns home after the trawler is lost at sea. She soon gets caught up in a web of deceit, superstition and murder.
All cultures have myths relating to the sea and how it gives life and also takes it, requiring a tribute from humans for its bounty.
In An Fear Liath, these payments are made in flesh, in lives, in bodies that disappear, in empty coffins.
This new show from Fíbín sa Taibhdhearc follows their recent acclaimed outdoor productions of Muc Rí and Cogadh na Saoirse, both of which were written and directed by Philip. This production is being directed by the artistic director of the National Galician Theatre, Fran Núnez, and is in partnership with the minority language theatre network, Phōnē.
This late-night spectacle at the Claddagh Basin promises to have deep allusions to Irish mythology and Greek tragedy as it walks between this world and the next, giving voice to a country unmoored by grudges, thwarted dreams, and self-medication.
This is the latest collaboration from An Taibhdhearc under the European project Phōnē, which was established to safeguard and promote minority languages.
Other joint projects in recent years include International Night or Vai e Ven, created in collaboration with Welsh company Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru.
An Fear Liath will be staged at the Claddagh Basin from July 25-27 at 10pm nightly and tickets are available at giaf.ie, 091-566577 and at the festival box office, 31, Eyre Square.
