WHAT started out as a humble one-acre plot of organic vegetables back in 2002 is now poised to celebrate its 20th birthday in a far bigger way.
The Beechlawn farm, in Ballinasloe, now spans 56-acres with nine commercial polytunnels and a workforce of some 20 people.
On this coming Saturday, September 10, Beechlawn will proudly celebrate its 20th birthday with a whole series of events lined up through the day.
Managed by husband-and-wife team, Padraig Fahy and Úna Ní Bhroin – the couple met up at the Dromcollogher Organic College in Limerick – the farm now offers a range of organic fruit and veg to individual buyers and the greater retail sector.
The Beechlawn product range can be bought in many shops, supermarkets, farmers’ markets and healthfood shops across Ireland while they also do a strong business on their ‘webshop’.
Their Open Day/Harvest Celebration runs on Saturday from 10am to 5pm and is jam packed with events and demonstrations, according to Pádraig Fahy.
He said that the Irish Organic Association would be giving a talk on organic farming covering changes in the sector; quality assurance topics; as well as providing information on the new incentives available in organics.
