Fianna Fáil has selected Michael Regan for co-option to the county council seat left vacant by Shane Curley’s election to the Seanad.

The selection convention for the Loughrea Gort/Kinvara area seat took place last night at the Loughrea Hotel.

Former councillor Michael Regan won on the first count with 64 votes – defeating Shane’s aunt-in-law Fidelma Curley, and Mark Larkin, who ran in the last local elections.

Michael Regan is expected to be co-opted onto the county council at today’s meeting at County Hall.

Meanwhile, it’ll be another month before the other seat – left vacant by Fine Gael’s PJ Murphy also following his election to the Seanad – is filled.

Nominations for candidates are now open, and will close on April 1st, with the selection convention to be held on April 14th.
