Fianna Fail’s O Cuiv praises government for fodder scheme extension

Galway West TD and Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Agriculture Eamon O Cuiv has praised the Minster for Agriculture Simon Coveney for extending the fodder scheme.

The Imported Fodder Transport Scheme will be extended by two weeks until Wednesday two weeks May 29th.

Deputy O Cuiv says the extension of the scheme is a common sense move and gives a huge boost to farmers.

Appeal for information following Portumna crash

Gardai are appealing for witnesses following a single vehicle crash at the Portumna bridge this morning.

The road from Nenagh to Loughrea reopened shortly after 11 this morning following the completion of a technical exam.

Four men were travelling in a van when they hit the Portumna bridge around 6:30 this morning.

Gardaí, ambulance and two units of Portumna fire services rushed to the scene, and one of the men was taken to Portiuncula hospital in Ballinasloe.

He is being treated for head injuries, which have been described by Gardaí as serious.

President Higgins among GMIT’s first ever honorary fellowships

GMIT is to honour seven outstanding individuals including President Michael D Higgins with Honorary Fellowships at a special ceremony later this month.

It’s the first time in the 40 year history of the Institute the Governing Body of GMIT has decided to award honorary fellowships.

The GMIT Honorary Fellowships will be conferred at the g Hotel in the city this day two weeks Friday 24 May at 2.30pm in front of 200 invited guests.

City arthouse cinema granted 200 thousand euro

Galway City Council has agreed to provide 200 thousand euro in funding to the Art House cinema project.

It’s being termed as a final allocation, to be donated over four years, and is subject to the project securing further finance from the Western Development Commission.

The decision was made at last evening’s city council meeting where representatives of Solas explained how they are attempting to bridge a shortfall in funding to bring the building to completion.

The City Council acquired the site for the Art House Cinema on Merchants Road at a cost of 1.8 million euro, and donated it by way of long term lease.

Construction has been plagued with difficulties, however it’s now hoped the building will be completed this Autumn, and could be open by early 2014.
