There were few surprise sin the opening round f the FAI Junior Cup at the weekend, on what was somewhat of a mixed bag for city clubs.

Mervue United were handed a walkover by West Coast United, and they are joined in the next round by the club’s B Championship side as well.

Hibs, Renmore, Salthill Devon, and University of Galway also all advanced but Corrib Rangers and Knocknacarra bowed out, while West United were beaten by Devon.

Salthill Devon  5

West United  1

Monday night’s FAI Junior Cup tie in Drom clearly demonstrated the gulf in class between these two city sides, as four opening-half goals set the tone as Devon opened up a winning advantage, before scaling back on their enthusiasm after adding a fifth early in the second-half.

It was their second meeting of the season, with Devon winning by a comfortable 3-0 margin on that first occasion in a league encounter. Of course, playing on the All-Weather in Drom is a huge advantage to a home side that nonetheless was showing five changes to the very experienced crew that completed a Premier League and Connacht Junior Cup double last season.
