FARMERS are already enthusiastic participants in the ‘Better Farming for Water’ campaign launched last week – but they need support, common-sense and flexibility in their ongoing efforts to improve water quality
That’s the view of Galway IFA Chair, Stephen Canavan, following the launch of the ‘8-Actions for Change’ programme, officially launched by Agriculture Minister, Charlie McConalogue at Teagasc, Ashtown, Dublin, last week .
“They really are speaking to the converted on this issue. Farmers are absolutely committed to ensuring that water quality is at its absolute best – we comply with every regulation. It’s in our own best interest to have clean water,” Stephen Canavan told the Farming Tribune this week.
National IFA President, Francie Gorman, reiterated that farmer commitment to improving Irish water quality but added that Teagasc needed to have the resources to properly implement the campaign.
“The Dept. of Agriculture and all arms of the State must also step up to the plate. Delays in TAMS and in the planning process are slowing farmers down in carrying out environmental works on their farms,” said Francie Gorman.
Stephen Canavan said that obviously factors like the weather were outside farmers’ control but added that a bit more flexibility with regard to slurry regulations would be a big help for everyone.
