A Different View with Dave O’Connell
You don’t have to know how to play poker to have a poker face; a good shot of Botox, for example, will leave you with a visage that is semi-permanently frozen in time.
The trick is to make sure you’re wearing an expression you’ll be happy to live with, before the injection – otherwise, like the Irish Mammies used to say in a different pre-botulinum era, you could be left like that when the wind changes.
The Beautiful South have a whole repertoire of great songs, but few surpass Prettiest Eyes, which is a love song about a couple in older age with the recurring observation of how those eyes show those ‘sixty 25th of Decembers; fifty-nine fourth of Julys’.
In other words, the lines on a face are a wonder to behold because they represent life’s experience, like the rings on the bark on a tree; shared times and a lifetime of memories.
But that’s no good for those who still want skin at seventy that’s as smooth as a baby’s bottom – so they’ll have themselves injected with a toxin that leaves them devoid of those lines…and perhaps of any expression at all.
Although occasionally, they were injected at the wrong moment, and they look like they are permanently surprised with eyebrows arched as though they’ve been invisibly stuck to their scalp.
