Everything on the line for Galway United in the First Division promotion final

IT won’t be quite on the level of the Siege of Limerick by the Williamite army in 1691, but this Friday will see another march south from Galway for a skirmish in Limerick as Galway United head to the Markets Field to take on Waterford FC in the First Division promotion final (7.45pm).
United are expected to bring their biggest away support to a game since the final outing of the 2008 Premier Division season, when about 500 fans headed to Dublin for a game against UCD, which United needed to win to stay up.
They did, courtesy of John Fitzgerald’s only goal of the tie, but Friday’s clash on neutral territory with Waterford could see double that number travelling, with four supporters’ buses from Galway supplemented by scores more fans travelling by car; while there is also a bus for United supporters living in Dublin.
A flick of a coin last Sunday night saw United win the right to be classed as the home team on Friday, meaning they will have the main stand along the side of the pitch, with Waterford fans confined to the small temporary structure behind the goal at the Geraldine Villas end of the ground, as well as the embankment on the dugout side of the ground.
United are going all out to make it feel like a home game – the club is supplementing the price of a bus ticket, so instead of €20, a seat will cost €5; while the club is also putting on a free bus for anyone who volunteered at home games during the season.
