Country Living with Francis Farragher
Like most people with the passing of years, when in vacant or pensive mood, to borrow a line from one William Wordsworth (what a great name for a poet!), one can slip into little bouts of melancholia and wonder how many more summers can be pencilled into our personal calendars of life.
The passing of an old friend like someone who had a regular seat in the local hostelry can send us spinning into a world where we realise that our life thread is so fragile and often so much outside of our control, regardless of all the health advice out there, as to how we elongate our human existence.
On top of all that, last week, a little text arrived from the HSE with that critical statistic on age a little reminder that another dose of the Covid-19 vaccine is due, just as I happened to stumble across a piece on the internet about anti-vaxxers reminding us all of a global plot to drastically reduce the human population by taking ‘thej ab’.
I’ll have to put my cards on the table and say that when it comes to health and self-preservation, I’m inclined to go with the medical advice and rely on my local doc to steer me in the right direction, in terms of personal health.
My logic is simplistic enough on this one. If my car doesn’t start, I won’t ring up a blocklayer to resolve the problem; if there’s a new timber unit to be fitted in the sitting room I won’t be in contact with the local electrician to price the job; if there’s a heifer poorly in the shed, I won’t really contemplate putting a call through to my local barber; or if the oil-boiler is airlocked then there’s surely no point in ringing up the district nurse about the problem.
