Ar Ais Arís is an electronic music night that has been building a strong reputation in Galway since its debut in Áras na nGael last August. It is a project that incorporates garage, jungle and techno, and aims to champion the sense of community felt among artists and supporters of Irish rave music.
One of the features that has endeared the event in its early form to attendees is the Rise Up sound system, which hails from Cork and was described by the night’s founder, Rob Flynn (Rob Rua), as the best in the country.
Since starting the night, Rob has brought Hannah Hession and Alannah Dunford into the Ar Ais Arís fold, the third instalment of which takes place on New Year’s Eve back in Áras.
Headlining on the night is Flood co-founder and Glasgow-based producer Doubt, who makes his Galway debut alongside Rob, Luke Kiid and Beansidhe, all of whom are based in the city.
“Flood is one of my favourite Irish labels,” says Rob.
“They’ve been doing really great stuff for years. I went to see Doubt, who heads up that label, at the Open Ear Festival which was on Valentia Island during the summer. He was headlining the Saturday night and he was just amazing. I did a gig with him in Cork in August and that was really good – he’s a really good guy who makes really good music, he’s a wicked DJ and I like his record label.
“We have a shortlist of people we want to get, and he was very high up on the top of it. He lives in Glasgow and is normally based there, so when he’s back for Christmas I thought this was a good opportunity to get him up from Cork. It’s important for us to put a spotlight on stuff in Ireland that we think is really good and that’s probably a bit underground. He really fits what we’re trying to do with the night so an ideal headliner really.”
