Turloughmore 2-23
St. Thomas’ 0-14
Ivan Smyth at Kenny Park
SEÁN Loftus fired 1-12 as Turloughmore brought St. Thomas’ 22- game unbeaten streak in the Galway senior hurling championship to an abrupt end.
This was St. Thomas’ worst performance in many a year as Franny Forde’s side highlighted their championship credentials. This was the first time St. Thomas’ lost a game in Galway since April 2019 before last Saturday’s surprisingly one-sided encounter.
Credit must go to Turloughmore for how they went about their business, besting the reigning champions from pillar to post as they fired out a statement of intent. It was far from a one man show for Turloughmore as although Loftus starred, Daithí Burke excelled at centre back while Kevin Hussey won a mountain of ball before retiring injured during the third quarter. Seán Linnane helped link defence and attack as Turloughmore never trailed in a commanding performance.
From the start, Turloughmore looked the sharper side with the reigning champions second best in every sector. Their first touch and distribution of the sliotar were way below their usual levels while they appeared rattled by the ferocity of Turloughmore’s pressure. Forde’s attacking unit doing an excellent job of stopping quality ball going in to Conor Cooney and co.
