Away from the popular Algarve region so beloved of Irish holidaymakers, northern Portugal is home to historic cities, ancient villages, breathtaking views and, of course, port wine. Porto is the perfect base from where to explore it all as STEPHEN CORRIGAN discovered. Visiting this area has never been easier, with regular flights between Porto and Shannon.
Irish holidaymakers are more than familiar with the southern tip of Portugal – the Algarve having been a firm favourite with people for decades.
But the northern part of the country holds a whole host of undiscovered treasures for travellers looking to explore ‘the real Portugal’ – and it’s less than two hours away, thanks to twice-weekly flights from Shannon to Porto.
The stunning city of Porto serves as the perfect base and has, within one hour’s drive, the breathtaking views of Arouca, the historic city of Braga and the oldest village in Portugal at Ponte de Lima.
As you walk around the colourful and cobbled streets of Porto, the history of this vibrant and lively city is evident at every turn – as is the reason it has been granted the title of UNESCO World Heritage site for the historical significance of its buildings.
While the city, situated at the mouth of the Douro River, is probably best known for its production of port wine, the spectacular and jaw-droppingly high bridges across the Douro are another major attraction. And if capturing the best photos for Instagram is your aim, they certainly provide fertile ground for any snap-happy, aspiring influencer.
The best way to see the famous ‘six bridges’ is from the water, and moderately priced boat tours provide a great guide to their design and history – the 45-metre-high Dom Luís Bridge was designed by Gustave Eiffel whose name is probably more synonymous with a certain Parisian tower.
Off the bridges are the bustling streets of this growing city which is a haven for history buffs, but also a great destination for foodies.
A good pair of walking shoes should be top priority for this hilly city, but a metro, cable cars and even a vintage tram are all available to lessen the strain on your legs.
Mercado do Bolhão, an open-air food market, is a must-visit, to see the best of Portuguese produce on display in a space that has served Porto’s residents for almost 200 years.
It wouldn’t be a trip to Porto without indulging in a couple of pastéis de nata. As well as sampling these world-famous custard tarts, you’ll have plenty of opportunity to see how they’re made too, with shops such as ‘Manteigaria’, next door to the market, offering a window into the kitchen where you’ll see the pastry chefs at work.
For an outstanding dining experience, dinner at Vinum should be on your list – even if it does take a bit of planning and an advance booking.
With unbeatable views across the city, the restaurant is in the heart of Graham’s 19th Century wine cellar and if you’re not familiar with Graham’s Port, you will be by the time you finish the five-course tasting menu (€120).
Each course is paired, some with the ruby ports we are familiar with, of various vintages, and one with a white port which offers a refreshing alternative – each glass as good as the last.
