The first weekend back after a long break was a rewarding one for Salthill Devon as the A team dismissed 10-man Athenry with ease in the Premier Division and in the process joined them at the top of the table; while in Division 2, the club’s B side just about overcame second placed Galway Bohs to strengthen their position at the summit in the lower league.
Salthill Devon 5
Athenry 0
Salthill Devon gave departing manager Victor Collins the perfect send-off with a comprehensive victory over a previously unbeaten Athenry in the wind and rain in Drom on Friday night. For the duration the home side were in control of affairs and two opening-half goals had them well in command, before their cause was assisted even more when the visitors were reduced to 10 players for an off-the-ball incident.
The writing was on the wall at that stage, and while Athenry spared no effort to try and get back into the game, they really struggled to have any sort of impact in attack. Three more second-half goals clearly displayed the gulf between the teams as the home side won with ease.
The contest saw amateur international winger Mikie Fox provide set-piece assists for the three opening goals, before adding the fourth himself with a visionary lob from half-way over a stranded TJ Forde, who went for walkies out about the edge of his area and was fully punished for his positioning.
Recent meetings between the teams had all fallen the way of Devon, and an early goal set them on the way when Cillian Doyle applied the far post header to send a Fox corner to the net. The visitors probed but seldom threatened, as a Ray Moran shot easily saved by Eric Mamala was a rare effort on target. Athenry were caught ball watching on 26 minutes as Aaron Conway were left all alone in the box to volley home a Fox free-kick from half-way and make it 2-0.
Conway twice threatened to increase their advantage, before the red mist descended on Adam Duffy for an off the ball push on Conway and for which he collected the obligatory red card and with it any chance of a Athenry recovery disappeared.
