A more difficult assignment than many imagined, but Davitts closed out a successful season last Saturday when they were crowned Senior B camogie champions. Four Catherine Hanley points in the final quarter proved the difference as they added silverware to Senior A promotion achieved in September.
Alan Dervan’s charges had lost the league decider to Carnmore a month earlier, but were expected to make amends against a St. Thomas’ unit who had underperformed with three defeats in the round-robin section.
And the game started in that fashion as joint captain Ciara Hickey gained space to open Davitts’ account on three minutes. St. Thomas’ were creating opportunities but not troubling the umpires and the south east Galway side increased their advantage.
Hanley’s first free was converted on six minutes before Hickey turned provider for Chloe Farragher and she made it 0-3 to 0-0 a minute later. Niall Gillane’s side finally got off the mark 60 seconds later when Áine Keane registered her first placed ball. While the contest was competitive, scores were scarce. Hanley restored Davitts’ three-point advantage on the quarter hour before the pace started to pick up.
First, Hickey was put through by Maria Breheny but her attempt landed in front of Galway goalkeeper Sarah Healy even if she needed ground assistance before clearing. St. Thomas’ took inspiration from that escape, laying siege at the other end.
