County Mayor backs campaign to reduce pedestrian road deaths

Date Published: 08-May-2013

Mayor of County Galway Tom Welby is calling on pedestrians to take basic steps to improve safety on our roads.

It’s part of UN Global Road Safety Week which continues until Sunday.

Galway County Council as well as local authorities in Mayo and Donegal are urging pedestrians to ‘Check Before You Step Out’ as part of the initiative.

To date this year, 3 pedestrians have died on our county roads with five recorded last year.

High visibility vests and armbands will be made available at all local area council offices throughout the county from tomorrow (Friday) and at local library branches from next week as part of the campaign.

County Mayor Tom Welby says steps such as wearing a high-visibility jacket can assist to avoid fatalities.
