Councils yet to comment on plans for newly acquired Galway airport

Galway Bay fm newsroom – The city and county councils are to issue a joint statement on their plans for Galway airport later this afternoon.

The local authorities have purchased the 116 acre Carnmore facility from Galway Chamber in a joint venture at a cost of 1.1 million euro.

Chamber President Jim Fennell says a “satisfactory arrangement” has been made with the airport’s main creditors – two banks and the Department of Transport and no debts will be transferred to the new owners

Mayor of Galway Padraig Conneely says the move will support local economic strategic development.

The site has been used solely for private aviation since 2011 after the withdrawal of State funding for services led to a gradual withdrawal of commercial services.

The five remaining staff are also to be laid off from this Friday.

The aviation licence is being handed back next week and Galway Flying Club and Skydive Ireland who use the facility are not commenting.

Galway Bay fm news went out and about to see what the public thinks about the local authorities buying the airport in Carnmore.
