Council for the West urges government to implement rural report

Galway Bay fm newsroom – The Council for the West is urging the government to implement recommendations made by a rural development commission as a matter of extreme urgency.
The Commission for the Economic Development of Rural Areas report outlines 38 points to guide rural economic development until 2025.
It hightlights areas such as tourism, agriculture, the marine, the caring sector, financial and software services and medical devices.
The Council of the West is a voluntary independent body established to monitor the socio-economic conditions in seven counties in the West including Galway.
Declan O Callaghan, Vice-Chairman of the Council, says that the report was prepared at the request of the government but there are concerns that nothing has been heard since.

Catherine Connolly critical of delays on report into sexual misconduct within Defence Forces

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Galway West TD Catherine Connolly is voicing disappointment at continued delays on a report into sexual misconduct within the Defence Forces.

Raising the matter with the Taoiseach in the Dáil, she said it’s been a year since an independent investigation was announced by Government.

She noted the terms of the investigation were not in-line with what affected female members of the Defence Forces had requested.

Deputy Connolly argued that led to broken trust – and a year on, we still don’t have a final report.

Speaking in response, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said the Tanaiste expects a completed report “very soon”.

Department of Housing issues correction to its statement on house price limits for Galway – increase is €10,000, not €20,000

Galway Bay fm newsroom – The Department of Housing has this evening issued a correction to its earlier statement on house price limits for Galway – the increase is €10,000, not €20,000

Clarified statement – From 01 March 2023, house price limits for homes in Galway that are eligible for the Local Authority Home Loan will increase by €10,000 from €320,000 to €330,000. Income limits for joint applicants will increase to €85,000 and the income limit for a single applicant in Galway will increase to €70,000.

Galway public share opinions on internet safety and inappropriate content for kids

Galway Bay fm newsroom – More than one in five children have seen something on the internet they wouldn’t want their parents to know about.

That’s according to a survey of 1200 primary school kids, to mark international Safer Internet Day today.

The Children’s Ombudsman is now calling on social media platforms to do more to protect kids online.

David Nevin has been asking people in Galway if they think the internet can be a dangerous place for kids.
