Sarsfields 3-16
Clarinbridge 1-22
Ivan Smyth at Duggan Park
In the end it lived up to the billing! After a rather error-strewn and tentative first half, Sarsfields and Clarinbridge produced a memorable final period of action as these two championship contenders fired every shot in their vast artillery.
In the end, it was Joseph Cooney’s point in the 62nd minute that salvaged a draw for Sarsfields although when both sides reflect on this encounter, they will identify areas that could have altered the result.
For Clarinbridge, they failed to convert their chances in the opening quarter, striking eight wides in 13 minutes while the concession of three goals will be a concern.
Their full-back line coped reasonably well when Ciaran Dolan’s wind assisted puckouts were raining down on them in the final period with Oisín Salmon storming out with possession four times in the second-half.
Meanwhile, Sarsfields will examine how they failed to take advantage of Clarinbridge’s wayward shooting in the early exchanges, eventually trailing by a point at half time as they drifted out of the game in the second quarter when the ‘Bridge found their scoring form.
They also coughed up a cheap goal when Sarsfields goalkeeper Ciaran Dolan misjudged the flight of TJ Brennan’s shot as it dropped to the net with the sun in the shotstopper’s eyes midway through the final period, but time and again they found tonic goals to keep them alive before Joseph Cooney’s late point.
