Contract awarded for €1.8m upgrade works at Ballinasloe Garda station

Galway Bay fm newsroom – A contract has been awarded for major upgrade works at Ballinasloe Garda Station.
The building is set to be significantly upgraded under the Government’s Building and Refurbishment Programme for 2016-2021.

Works earmarked for Ballinasloe Garda station include the construction of a new public office and a new cell block.
The project is worth almost 2 million euro – and is being carried out under a Government plan to upgrade and refurbish 30 stations nationwide.
The contract for the works at Ballinasloe has been awarded to Mayo-based Finna Construction Limited.
Prelimary works commenced around Christmas, and with full works now underway, it’s expected the project will be completed by October.

8,039 new cases of COVID-19

From the Galway Bay FM newsroom:

A further 8,039 COVID-19 cases have been confirmed by the Department of Health.

3,692 are PCR while a further 4,347 positive antigen tests have been registered through the HSE portal.

885 people are in hospital with the virus – 76 of them are in ICU.

From Galway Bay FM newsroom- Women across Galway city are being encouraged to highlight areas along their daily walk where they don’t feel safe, that can be improved by the local authority.

City Councillor Owen Hanley says he has been contacted by numerous people who have flagged areas across the city which women in particular felt weren’t safe enough.

Issues highlighted include hedges that are too high, blind spots or lights which are not in operation.

Councillor Hanley says he is planning to bring such issues to the attention of Galway City Council,who can do more to ensure walkers feel safe.

Over €23m for active travel projects across Galway

From Galway Bay FM newsroom- More than €23m in funding is on the way to connect communities across Galway and make walking and cycling a safe transport alternative

The Government’s Active Travel Investment Programme will fund 64 projects across Galway city and county.

This will include cycling and footpath infrastructure, pedestrian crossings, public transport measures, investment in the Safe to Schools programme and the development of local greenways.
