Connemara people’s 60 mile trip for Irish-speaking welfare officers

Galway West Fine Gael T.D. Seán Kyne has tabled a number of Dáil questions to the Minister for Social Protection in relation to services through the Irish language in the new centralised community welfare system.

Connemara people may have to travel over 60 kilometers to meet an Irish speaking community welfare officer under the proposed new system.

Deputy Kyne has tabled questions to Minister Joan Burton about the changes and says he expects answers next week.

Michael Fitzmaurice says proposed EU rewetting laws will devastate stock levels

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Deputy Michael Fitzmaurice says proposed EU laws on the rewetting of drained peatlands being used for agriculture will devastate stock levels.

The regulations have high reclaimation targets set – 30 percent by 2030, 50 percent by 2040 and 70 percent by 2050.

Farmers have expressed fierce opposition to the proposals but Minister Eamon Ryan confirmed his support in a Dáil exchange with Deputy Michael Fitzmaurice.

Speaking to Galway Talks, Deputy Fitzmaurice says if it comes to pass, the impact on stock will be devastating.

County council seeks funding for Athenry to Oranmore cycleway

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Galway County Council has submitted a funding application for a new cycleway connecting Athenry to Oranmore.

It would be funded under Transport Minister Eamon Ryan’s Pathfinder grant programme for cycling and walking schemes.

The Athenry/Oranmore cycleway proposes to connect both areas and surrounds to Galway city.
