Galway Bay fm newsroom – Galway County Council has confirmed that oil traces found under a Connemara road are a result of soil contamination.
The oil was spotted deep in the road in the Casla area between Derrynea crossroads and Carraroe by contractors laying pipes for a local water scheme.
Samples have been sent away for analysis.
A spokesperson for Galway County Council told Galway Bay fm news that tests are being carried to out determine the source and extent of the contamination.
Contractors working on the water scheme on the Carraroe Road have skipped a short section of the pipeline until the source of the contamination is known.
Local TD demands support for farmers with cost of shearing sheep
Galway Bay fm newsroom – Galway East TD Sean Canney says the Government must put a scheme in place to support farmers in the shearing of sheep.
It follows the recent publication of a long-awaited Wool Feasibility Study, which recommends a range of measures to develop and market Irish wool.
Deputy Canney says while it’s all hugely positive news, farmers do need some help in the meantime – such as a €5 shearing grant per sheep.
Speaking to Galway Talks, he says there is huge potential for wool in our economy.
City language school calls for state funding to support free English lessons for Ukrainians
Galway Bay fm newsroom – A city language school is calling on the Government to provide funding to meet the enormous demand for English lessons from Ukrainian refugees.
Galway Language School, based at Bridge Mills, is providing free classes during the summer months.
But it says it cannot meet the huge demand for the lessons, which it argues will help refugees to integrate and take up jobs in many sectors.
Speaking to Galway Talks, Director Patrick Creed says the state urgently needs to provide support.
30 SIPTU community workers protest in Eyre Square over pay
Galway Bay fm newsroom – Approximately 30 SIPTU workers carrying flags and banners have gathered in Eyre Square to protest over pay
The protest is part of the 24 hour work stoppage in the community sector and Section 39 organisations in Galway, Dublin and Waterford
The industrial action is part of the Valuing Community campaign, with the workers calling for their first pay rise in 14 years.
The Galway city protesters have been speaking to our reporter David Nevin
