Killimordaly 2-21

Abbeyknockmoy 1-18

KILLIMORDALY made it two wins from two as they went top of Group Two in the senior B hurling championship after an impressive six-point win against Abbeyknockmoy. On a perfect afternoon for hurling, Killimordaly were full of endeavour as their greater scoring threat was too much for Abbeyknockmoy to handle. The men in green and white had eight different scorers compared to their opponent’s five and it was their greater firepower which saw them over the line.

Shane Sweeney and Paul Cooney’s charges have enjoyed an upsurge in scoring in their two games to date. They struck 2-22 against Ballinderreen two weeks ago, while they hit one point less against a determined Abbeyknockmoy side. Killimordaly scored five goals in seven championship games last year while they are only one goal behind that tally after playing just two matches this year.

The two teams started quickly as Galway player Brian Concannon helped himself to the opening two points of the game to push Killimordaly ahead before a Paul Flaherty free allowed Abbeyknockmoy to half the deficit. A well taken Paul Concannon score and a Brian Burke free helped push the 2012 intermediate champions three points ahead after nine minutes.

Abbeyknockmoy subsequently enjoyed a purple patch as they hit 1-4 without reply. A Flaherty free was followed by two points from Caelom Mulry who excelled in his midfield role. Mulry’s second point came after an excellent catch off a puckout from Flaherty before the former Galway hurler off loaded to Mulry who slotted over. Flaherty, who also plays football with Monivea-Abbey, struck a long range free which found its way to the net after the sliotar evaded Killimordaly’s full-back Conor Daly and Padraig Daly in goal. Another free from the reliable Flaherty pushed Abbeyknockmoy four points clear.
