There was a real sense of unity and pride in Radharc na Gréine, Mervue, last Saturday, as residents turned out in large numbers for a community-led clean-up, transforming their estate in a single day of shared effort.
Organised by the residents’ association, this initiative brought neighbours together with one common goal: to improve their environment and strengthen their community.
Cllr Helen Ogbu (Lab), who was present, commended their efforts: “This was more than just a clean-up; it was a powerful statement of pride, cooperation, and determination to create a better neighbourhood. The transformation was amazing, a real team effort.”
She said that residents had long called for support, and she thanked Galway City Council for stepping up and responding, as well as local businesses who provided power washers, tools, equipment and vouchers.
“Their generosity and commitment to the community highlight the true power of local solidarity,” added Cllr Ogbu.
The day concluded with a joyful neighbourhood celebration, allowing residents to relax, reconnect, and take pride in what they had accomplished together.
Looking ahead, Cllr Ogbu stressed the importance of maintaining the momentum: “When communities and the Council work hand in hand, we can achieve long-lasting change. I look forward to working with residents and Council officials on developing a sustained maintenance and improvement plan for Radharc na Gréine.
“This clean-up was a beautiful reminder that positive change begins at the grassroots and that collective action can lead to real, visible results.
