ANOTHER member of Galway’s 2017 All-Ireland winning team has announced his retirement with the versatile Johnny Coen bringing the curtain down on a senior career that spanned a dozen seasons.
The 31-year old said the time was now right to step down from inter-county hurling but has vowed to continue with his club Loughrea who were beaten in a Galway final replay by St Thomas’ a few weeks ago.
A former All-Ireland minor and U21 winner, Coen also captured two National League titles and helped Galway win their first Leinster senior crown in 2012.
But the pinnacle came in 2017 when he lined out at midfield with his Loughrea Vocational School teaching colleague David Burke and they defeated Waterford to win the All-Ireland title for the first time in 29 years.
Coen’s versatility, he was comfortable in defence, midfield or the forwards, was a huge addition to the five managers – John McIntyre, Anthony Cunningham, Micheál Donoghue, Shane O’Neill and Henry Shefflin — he played under for Galway.
“I’ve been privileged to share a dressing room with so many wonderful players and work with great people and management teams along the way which I am forever grateful,” he said.
