Clifden car enthusiast celebrates 106th birthday

Galway Bay fm newsroom – A Clifden native will be celebrating her 106th birthday on Monday.
Eileen Lovett currently lives at St. David’s Retirement Home in Salthill.
There will be a small celebration for Eileen this weekend with her daughter Eimear and staff at St. David’s.
Eileen is well known for her love of cars.
She was the first woman in Ireland to drive a Ford Model T and bought her last car at 99 years old, a Ford Focus for her daughter.

Galway TD challenges Minister in Dáil over exclusion of carers from healthcare bonus

A Galway TD has challenged the Minister for Public Expenditure in the Dáil over the exclusion of family and home carers from the pandemic bonus.

Frontline healthcare workers are to be given a 1 thousand euro bonus to recognise their efforts throughout COVID-19.

However, under the current plans, home and family carers are not eligible for the payment.

Addressing Minister Michael McGrath, Deputy Mairead Farrell pointed out they lost everything during the pandemic at very short notice.

She argued without their efforts, the Government would have been in a very serious predicament.

Ballinasloe group wins legal challenge preventing the operation of a waste transfer facility in the town

A Ballinasloe community group has succeeded in its latest legal action to prevent the operation of a waste transfer facility in the East Galway town.

The ‘Ballinasloe Says No’ group took legal action to prevent Galway County Council granting a permit to operate a waste transfer station at Poolboy in April 2021.

The High Court has now quashed the decision by Galway County Council to grant a permit on environmental grounds.

The group are calling on the local authority to refuse any future application for a permit or extension or renewal of planning permission for a waste transfer facility in Poolboy.

Speaking to Galway Talks earlier, PRO & Secretary of the Ballinasloe Says No campaign Senator Aisling Dolan says the group is prepared to challenge any further attempts to bring a waste transfer facility to the town.

Two arrested in connection with major Galway city drugs seizure are released without charge

Two men arrested in connection with a €85,000 cash and drug seizure in Galway city have been released without charge.

Shortly after 8pm on Tuesday Galway Divisional Drugs Unit carried out a search at a house in the Ballybane area of Galway City.

Over €53,000 worth of suspected cocaine, €25,000 in cash along with smaller amounts of cannabis herb and MDMA were seized.

Last night two men, both in their late teens were arrested in connection with the seizure.

Gardai say both men have now been released without charge and a file will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
