City to mark anniversary of Hiroshima bombing

Galway Bay fm newsroom – The secretary of the People’s Movement will speak at an event in the city this weekend to mark the anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima in 1945.
Frank Keoghan will be the keynote speaker at the Hiroshima peace event taking place in Eyre Square on Sunday.
The event is led by the Galway Alliance Against War and will also debate fears over the growing militarisation of the EU.
The event takes place this Sunday (5/8) at 1pm.

Seanad hears of limitations on Galway’s expansion due to wastewater capacity

Galway Bay fm newsroom – The Seanad has heard of the major limitations on the growth of Galway City and its suburbs due to wastewater treatment capacity.

The matter was raised by Senator Sean Kyne, who spoke of the current strain on the Mutton Island treatment plant.

He spoke of the urgent need to progress the often talked about Galway East main drainage wastewater treatment plant.

Senator Kyne offered that this plant would accommodate areas including the east of the city, Oranmore, Athenry, and the proposed new townland of Ardaun.

Senator Kyne noted that Galway City’s population is projected to increase to 120 thousand within the next two decades.

However, he said this figure will not be realised if progress isn’t made on increasing wastewater treatment capacity…

Galway TD calls on Government to reconsider State Community Bank

Galway Bay fm newsroom – A Galway TD says it’s time for the Government to reexamine the possibility of establishing a state bank for SME’s.

Deputy Seán Canney has raised the issue in the wake of Ulster Bank’s announcement that it is to exit the Irish market.

He says now is the time for the Government to examine possible delivery mechanisms for community banking to be implemented.

He believes this could be done through An Post or the local Credit Union network, as they have the infrastructure, facilities and visibility required.

Independent Deputy Canney says SME’s are the answer to getting our country back up-and-running post Covid – and they’ll need the right support.

Virtual public meeting to discuss planned Bank of Ireland branch closure in Oughterard

Galway Bay fm newsroom – A public meeting will take place this evening (March 4) over Bank Of Ireland’s decision to close its branch in Oughterard.

The meeting is led by Sinn Féin Galway West TD Mairéad Farrell and former Sinn Féin councillor Tom Healy.

It takes place online this evening at 7 with those wishing to join asked to email galwaysf@gmail.com.

It comes as earlier this week, Bank of Ireland confirmed it is to close branches in Ballygar, Dunmore and Oughterard.

The bank is shutting 88 outlets in the Republic, and 15 in Northern Ireland in September.

The Bank will continue to operate with 169 branches, including 15 in Galway.

Deputy Mairéad Farrell says it’s a huge loss to the community in Oughterard….
