City man to be sentenced in July over shotgun possession

Galway Bay fm newsroom – A 24-year-old city man faces sentence in July for having a sawn-off shotgun in his possession in Rahoon two years ago.

Michael Murphy, 203 Laurel Park, Newcastle, Galway, pleaded guilty before Galway Circuit Criminal Court to the unlawful possession of a Baikel shotgun, the barrel of which had been shortened, at Droim Chaoin, Rahoon on April, 19, 2012.

Defence Barrister, Jennifer Higgins asked for sentencing to be adjourned until a probation report was obtained on her client.

Speculation is rife in the United States that Marty Walsh is to leave politics

News is emerging from Washington that Marty Walsh, the son of Connemara emigrants, may shortly be leaving his position in the United States government to take up a powerful advocacy and administrative role in the National Hockey Association of America (NHLPA).

Walsh, a son of emigrants from Carna and Rosmuc, is the secretary for Labor Affairs in the US Government putting him in the eighth position behind the president.

He is also a former Mayor of the city of Boston.

He is also known to be a close personal friend of the president.

It is understood that all members of the player’s union board in the Hockey Association of the United States and Canada endorsed an effort yesterday to recruit Walsh to head their union.

According to sources close to Marty Walsh, details are being discussed.

In terms of money, the deal is very significant – running into millions of dollars per year according to some reports.

Walsh has been in conversation with President Biden in recent days.

It is all a big surprise but Marty Walsh may not be cutting all ties with politics. 

He would be coming back to Massachusetts where he could possibly contest a United States Senate seat in the future.

Disappointment voiced over the delay to repair Traffic Lights at University Hospital Galway

Disappointment has been voiced over the delay to repair the traffic lights at Galway University Hospital.

An announcement on the Galway City Council Social Media Pages has confirmed this and has advised motorists to expect delays and avoid the area if possible saying that transport and infrastructure staff are aiming to replace the lights by next Tuesday, the 7th.

Independent City Central Councillor Mike Cubbard, speaking this morning, told John Mulligan that while he did accept that lights can break down; he did not accept that it will take five days to repair them.

European Commission confirms daily fines against the State in relation to the Derrybrien windfarm will cease

Galway Bay fm newsroom – The European Commission has confirmed that daily fines being applied against the State in relation to the Derrybrien windfarm in South Galway will cease.

The State has reached agreement with the European Commission to cease fines of 15 thousand euro a day relating to the ESB-owned wind farm

The sanctions were imposed as a result of Ireland’s failure to ensure environmental standards were upheld at the facility on the Slieve Aughty mountains.

The State has, over the years, paid more than €17 million to the commission, due to the breaches.

The final sum due to be paid is €1,245,000.

Operations at Derrybrien ended this time last year, after An Bord Pleanála refused an application for substitute consent at the site.

This meant the project was considered an unauthorised development.

The company subsequently announced that it would decommission the site.

In a statement to Galway Bay fm news the Dept of Housing says the exact details in relation to decommissioning and site restoration are a matter for Galway County Council and the owner
