City Councillor welcomes news on construction of passing loop at Oranmore Train station
Galway Bay FM Newsroom – News that the construction of the passing loop at Oranmore train station is close with a contractor about to be appointed has been welcomed by Galway City East Councillor Alan Cheevers
This was clarified yesterday at a meeting between Minister Eamon Ryan, Minister Hildegarde Naughton and Galway City Council Executive and Galway City Council Public representatives .
Councillor Cheevers welcomes the news and the prospect of a designated commuter service going from Athenry to the city saying that this is something that is long overdue as a transport option and also it will serve employees from the county who work in the city.
He added that this is just one option of the Galway Transport Strategy that has been discussed for a number of years but welcomed the news that it is finally coming to fruition.

While Traught in Kinvara has lost its long held Blue Flag, Trá Inis Oirr in the Aran Islands has been awarded a Blue Flag for the first time

Galway’s 8 Blue Flags have gone to Trá Inis Oirr as you just heard; Cill Mhuirbhigh on Inis Mór; An Trá Mór, Coill Rua in Inverin; Trá an Dóilín in Carraroe; the Bathing Place at Portumna; Loughrea Lake and in the city – Salthill Beach and Silverstrand.
Galway’s 8 Green Coast awards have gone to Aillebrack/Silver Hill, Dumhach Beach and East End Bay Inishbofin, Trá Poll na gCaorach on Inis Oirr, Trá Inis Oirr, Renvyle Beach Connemara and in the city – Salthill Beach and Silverstrand.
From Galway Bay FM newsroom- Galway is to take part in tomorrow’s national fundraising event for homeless ex-Defence Forces staff
Originally held in Dublin, the ‘sleeping flags’ campaign has expanded this year to Galway, Athlone, Cork and Limerick.
The event will see veterans sleeping out in tri-colour sleeping bags to highlight the level of Ireland’s ex-servicemen and women who find themselves homeless.
It’s run by the Organisation of National Ex-Service Personnel, known as ONE, which offers housing and support to homeless veterans in Ireland.
The event will run from 9 tomorrow morning to 9 tomorrow night.
From Galway Bay FM newsroom- Inis Oirr Beach on the Aran Islands has won its first ever Blue Flag but Traught beach in Kinvara has lost its flag
Traught is among five beaches nationwide which have failed to retain a blue flag status from last year, after their water quality was deemed to fall into a lesser category by An Taisce.
Meanwhile, the beach on Inis Oirr has been awarded a Blue Flag for the first time ever.
Trá Inis Oirr on the Aran Islands is included on the 2022 list which has just been published
Beaches in Cork, Dublin, Kerry and Wexford which didn’t have a Blue Flag last year have also been included.
In total, 85 beaches and 10 marinas will have blue flags this Summer, with 62 beaches also receiving Green Coast Awards.
