City centre boutique hotel closes its doors

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Well-known city centre business, the House Hotel at Lower Merchants Road has closed its doors.
Dublin-based firm Crowe Horwath has been appointed as receivers for the 4-star hotel.
Jury’s Hotel in the city has confirmed that it accommodated a number of guests yesterday who had been booked in to stay at the House Hotel.
The website for the hotel is also not allowing any future bookings at this time.
Hotelier and developer, Mike Finn, who also owned the Spanish Arch hotel was associated with the House Hotel.

Plans for new school for Gort National School

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Plans have been lodged for a new school building for Gort National School.

The project will involve the demolition of the existing school buildings and all structures including play shelters.

In their place would be a new 2-storey primary school with 12 classrooms, 2 special educational needs classrooms, and a school hall.

There’d also be changes to the the main entrance gate, as well as road alignment works and new footpaths along the Tubber Road.

Planners are due to make a decision in January.

Cabinet to sign-off on new surgical hub for Galway

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Cabinet Ministers are this morning expected to sign off on the creation of five new surgical hubs across the country, to deal with the backlog of planned operations.

The hubs will be located in Galway Cork, Limerick, Waterford and Dublin at a cost of up to 100 million euro.

The surgical hubs will focus on high volume surgeries like ear, nose and throat issues, urology, orthopaedics, gynaecology and general surgery.

A similar hub operating in Tallaght has reported a 90 per cent reduction in patients waiting more than three months for procedures over the past year and a half.

Ministers will also be asked this morning to progress the development of a new elective hospital in Galway, which would be based at Merlin Park.

They’ll also be looking at new elective hospitals for Cork and Dublin.

Local TD critical of ongoing delays to Additional Needs Payment

Galway Bay fm newsroom – A local TD is expressing frustration over ongoing delays in processing Additional Needs Payments.

The payment is a single payment to help those who cannot meet essential expenses with their income.

Those who receive the payment do not have be in receipt of any other social welfare payment to qualify.

Sinn Fein Deputy Clare Kerrane says it’s unacceptable that some payments are still taking up to 12 weeks to process.
