An Taibhdhearc’s new Christmas production, An Fathach Leithleasach – the first ever Irish-language adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s story The Selfish Giant – is running from next Tuesday, December 2, to Friday, December 19, at An Taibhdhearc.
Directed by the theatre’s Artistic Director, Muireann Kelly, this production centres on a grumpy giant who banishes children from his beautiful garden and turns everyone’s world upside down.
The show, set in the giant’s magic garden, explores themes of sharing, kindness, inclusivity and connection, through music, dance and fantastical creatures. As in Wilde’s fairytale of redemption, the giant learns kindness and his frost-covered garden blooms once more.
Oscar is played by Eoin Ó Dubhghaill, with Inga De Búrca as Áine/Sioc, Molly Mew as Méabh/Sneachta and Orlaith Ní Chearra as Síóg/An Ghaoth Aduaidh. Séamus Hughes plays an Fathach Leithleasach.
The children are played by Alex Botha, Juliette Cronin (Captaen), Grace Downes, Leah Downes (Captaen), Iarla Flanagan, Sofia Gannon, Tilda Hannon, Síofra Murphy, Cáit Ní Áinle, Emily Ní Chiaráin, Sophia Ní Chionnaith, Aifric Ní Dhónaill, Connor O’Neill agus Adhna Rutar.
This production is designed to be inclusive and accessible, with ISL performances on Saturday, December 6, at 7pm and at the 3pm matinee on December 7. There will be a relaxed performance on Sunday, December 14, and tickets for this can be booked at the box office in person, or at 091 357011.
English-language access to the show is available through the Sibrwd app, which was developed by Theatr Cymru in Wales. This app is designed to make the action easy to follow, no matter what level of Irish people have. Audiences can download it to their phones to receive closed captioning in English and Irish.
