Charged with assault on dance-floor Charged with assault on dance-floor

BY RONAN JUDGE

A woman allegedly bit another woman’s face and pulled her hair during an alleged assault on the dance-floor of a Galway city pub, a court has heard.

At Galway District Court, Judge Fiona Lydon accepted jurisdiction to hear the case against Shauna Leonard (28) after hearing an outline of the alleged facts and speaking to the alleged victim.

Leonard, with an address at 11 Cuan Glas, Bishop O’Donnell Road, is charged with assault causing harm to Rosie Roche at Busker Browne’s, Cross Street, on October 24, 2024.

The charge is contrary to section 3 of the Non Fatal Offences Against The Person Act as amended by section 20 of the Miscellaneous Provisions Act.

Sergeant Claire Heneghan outlined a summary of the alleged facts, to allow Judge Lydon consider jurisdiction.

The court was told that on the night, the parties had spoken but did not know each other.

Sgt Heneghan said it will be alleged that later in the night, Ms Leonard approached Ms Roche on the dance-floor, pulled her hair and bit her on the face.

The alleged victim did not require hospital treatment, the court heard.

Rosie Roche told Judge Lydon she was not left with any scar but had a bruise from her eye across her cheek.

She said she attended the campus doctor and did not need stitches or a tetanus shot.

Judge Lydon accepted jurisdiction to hear the case in the District Court and said it was clear Ms Roche was “very upset” by what is alleged to have happened.

She thanked Ms Roche for attending court as it allowed the case to move forward.

Judge Lydon directed that all statements be disclosed to defence solicitor Martina Moran and remanded the accused on continuing bail to appear in court on December 1.
