FOR the fourth consecutive year, Sarsfields camogie supporters will see their players take to the field on All-Ireland club final day, with the opportunity to claim the top spot once again on the national stage. On this occasion, the title holders will face off against Ulster champions Loughgiel Shamrocks of Antrim on Saturday evening at Croke Park (6:30pm).
Sarsfields’ supporters are well used to seeing silverware brought back to Bullaun and New Inn, and another All-Ireland title delivered by the club’s camogie players would get the Christmas celebrations started early.
It is a testament to the remarkable consistency of Hopper McGrath’s charges in recent years since they first made the breakthrough in 2016 with their first county senior title. The intervening years have seen Sarsfields claim a further five county titles, while they appeared in All-Ireland club finals in 2017, ’18, ’20, ’21, and again last season, when they defeated Oulart the Ballagh on a glorious day at Croke Park.
That 3-12 to 4-5 win over the Wexford club last March confirmed Sarsfields’ place among the great club sides of the modern era. The east Galway club return to the scene of that triumph on Saturday evening for what will undoubtedly be a testing encounter.
Sarsfields’ progress to the final is all the more impressive considering the injuries which have afflicted their squad this season. Orlaith McGrath [cruciate] is a long term absentee, while Sarah Spellman is another huge loss to the side. Sarsfields will also be keeping their fingers crossed that centre back Maria Cooney’s ankle holds up for the duration of Saturday’s final. Cooney has struggled to fully shake off the knock she suffered in their championship win over Athenry this year.
