BEFORE Sunday evening’s game in Tuam Stadium, we wondered if Salthill-Knocknacarra’s form so far this year might just have elevated them into the conversation regarding potential Frank Fox Cup winners in 2022.
Like a horse that had won a few good high grade handicaps before deciding to suddenly move into Grade One company at Cheltenham or Punchestown, all we knew was that they were progressing nicely, and full of potential.
Despite their five-point defeat to the reigning champions at Tuam Stadium, the city club arguably came through this contest with their reputation enhanced. For just under 45 minutes, they threw everything they had at Mountbellew-Moylough, and at 1-12 apiece, they were right in contention to take something out of a game that was being played to a very high standard.
Yet it wasn’t just John O’Mahony’s side who had something to prove in this game. As 2021 kingpins, it would be easy to suggest that Mountbellew-Moylough are there to be shot at this summer, and of course they are – but a combination of the manner of their Connacht semi-final defeat in Dr. Hyde Park, allied to the curious sight of Corofin heading the betting for this year’s championship despite results of the past two seasons – up until last Saturday at least – has given the men in black and amber something of a cause.
