A Modern Movement returns to the Loft on Bridge Street this Saturday for a night that champions a series of versatile, contemporary solo artists – including Cat Turner, Boyfrens, Craig Cameron and Gash Collective DJ Lolz. And while that means admirable variation in the styles at play on the bill, a theme of ingenuity in both songwriting and production runs strong throughout.
That is particularly true for the headliner. Alt-pop artist Cat Turner has been one of Galway’s most prolific producers in the last couple of years, honing her sound and exploring a variety of styles in her work.
She is steadily growing her reputation as a performer too – this gig spells her second collaboration with A Modern Movement in a matter of days, following a night in Dublin’s Sin É venue last Friday.
“It was actually unreal,” Cat says of the Sin É gig.
“I was so happy with how it went. I get very nervous and worked up with gigs. In the least pessimistic way, I kind of expect the worst so that anything else is better. It was a really nice turnout, and everybody was super excited.
“People were up dancing and singing along so it’s definitely got me buzzing for this weekend. [Performing solo] does add a lot of pressure and there are times when you think, if I just had another person that could alleviate some of this.
“But also, I think I’m kind of built to work alone onstage. I’m not against collaboration and working with other people but I think it’s all very personal to me. It kind of has to be that way. I love it but it does give you a lot of space to do a lot of self-reflection and internal monologues. It might not be ideal, but I wouldn’t change it.”
John O’Connor has established A Modern Movement as one of Galway’s premier nights in the past couple of years, and his work as a facilitator has helped push Cat outside of her comfort zone as a performer. The pair also worked together last June for AMM’s part in the Black Gate Introducing festival.
