Sarsfields 2-19
Castlegar 2-13

SARSFIELDS recorded an important first win in Group 1 of the senior championship on Sunday evening as a goal by Darren Murphy deep into injury time quelled any lingering fears of a dramatic Castlegar comeback.
In the end, though, the victors had a bit to spare over Castlegar, who for the second game running could not turn an encouraging start into a positive outcome.
Sarsfields were rocked when Greg Thomas netted in the opening minute, and the city side maintained a decent scoring rate until the 26th minute, when they led a scrappy contest by 1-8 to 1-5. Had they managed to get into the dressing room armed with a lead, perhaps the outcome could have been different, but from that point Sarsfields found another gear and hit nine of the next 11 scores either side of the break.
The first five of those came in quick succession before the short whistle as Murphy, Ian Fox, Kevin Cooney, and Adam Donohue nudged their side in front for the first time. Kevin Cooney was a lively and willing full forward who Sarsfields could not get into the game often enough, but when he did get opportunities he took them with aplomb, including a cracking goal midway through the first half.
