Liam Mellows 2-14
Rahoon-Newcastle/ Barna-Furbo 3-11
Eanna O’Reilly in Kinvara
LIAM Mellows and Rahoon-Newcastle/Barna Furbo played out a highly entertaining draw in the County Minor B1 Final in difficult conditions in Kinvara on Sunday.
A late score from Luke Carroll salvaged a deserved draw for Rahoon-Newcastle/Barna-Furbo on a day when neither team deserved to lose. Carroll held his nerve to nail an injury-time free and ensure another day out for both teams.
It was Carroll who opened the scoring in the first half, pointing a free from midfield. Barry Ford got Mellows off the mark with an impressive strike against the wind, before Eanna Coffey put Rahoon/Barna back in front with a good point.
The main difference between the sides in the opening half was their shooting accuracy. Although Rahoon/Barna dominated possession, they struck some poor wides from play and placed balls. Mellows were much more efficient, and Cillian O’Donovan showed impressive accuracy with 0-3 (two frees) to edge them 0-4 to 0-2 ahead.
The first green flag was raised at the other end, however. An impressive team move was finished off by Luke Carroll, who fired an excellent shot to the bottom corner past Jason McDonagh. Mellows’ hit back within two minutes when O’Donovan’s dipping 35-yard free ended up in the back of the net.
