Galway producer and presenter Pamela Finn has teamed up with award-winning film director Sean Tracey for Three Miles, a documentary, to mark the 60th anniversary of US President, John Fitzgerald Kennedy’s visit to Galway City.
And they want people who were there on that day, or who had family members or friends who were involved, to contact them.
JFK visited Ireland in June 1963. He was the first head of state to visit Ireland, which had been proclaimed as a republic just 14 years earlier. Ireland was struggling. Emigration was rife and there were only 2.9 million people left in the country, while a million who were born here were living in the UK.
JFK’s trip was to have huge ramifications for Ireland in terms of American interest, corporate investment and tourism.
It was a whirlwind tour that crammed an array of ceremonies into just a few days.
The Presidential entourage travelled across Dublin, down to Wexford and then on to Cork, Limerick and Galway.
Three Miles, which will be shot and released next year, is aiming to recreate the magical hour that JFK was in Galway, on June 29. On that day, 320 children from the Convent of Mercy, dressed in waterproof capes of green, white and gold formed a massive Irish flag that the President viewed from his helicopter, as he landed at the Sportsground.
