Galway 4-28
Laois 0-11
MUCH more of this and the Galway minor hurlers run the risk of being banished back to where they came from!
A 29-point thrashing of last year’s provincial finalists will only serve to fuel the original unease of most Leinster counties at having to accommodate by far the grade’s most successful force of the past two decades.
But with Leinster having already embraced the Galway seniors and U-20s, the continued exclusion of the county’s minors represented a form of sporting apartheid. It was an unsustainable attitude.
Having comfortably dealt with Antrim’s challenge the previous weekend on their Leinster debut, a stronger and sharper Galway outfit offered much greater evidence of their potential in 2023 against Laois at O’Moore Park on Saturday,
With the inclusion of fit-again quartet Thomas Blake, Stephen Keane, Vince Morgan and Jason Rabbitte only strengthening their team, Galway were significantly more impressive compared to their outing in Darver seven days earlier.
Sure, it took them 20 minutes to start breaking free from the Midlanders, but the floodgates opened coming up to half-time and the Laois challenge was simply washed away. They had eight points on the board after 19 minutes but would only manage three more white flags by the end of a one-sided contest.
The second-half proved a hard watch for their loyal band of supporters in the crowd of about 300 as Laois were overwhelmed by an opposition which had 11 different scorers, including team captain Seán Murphy who landed a mighty effort from his own half in the 59th minute.
