CALL TO EXPLORE TOURIST POTENTIAL OF LOUGHREA

There is a call for the tourist potential of Loughrea to be expanded.

At a meeting of the Town Council this week, Councillor Mary Nix said a concerted effort should be made to promote Loughrea as a tourist destination.

County Mayor backs campaign to reduce pedestrian road deaths

Mayor of County Galway Tom Welby is calling on pedestrians to take basic steps to improve safety on our roads.

It’s part of UN Global Road Safety Week which continues until Sunday.

Galway County Council as well as local authorities in Mayo and Donegal are urging pedestrians to ‘Check Before You Step Out’ as part of the initiative.

To date this year, 3 pedestrians have died on our county roads with five recorded last year.

High visibility vests and armbands will be made available at all local area council offices throughout the county from tomorrow (Friday) and at local library branches from next week as part of the campaign.

County Mayor Tom Welby says steps such as wearing a high-visibility jacket can assist to avoid fatalities.

Costello Lodge fails to sell at auction but sale negotations now underway

Costello Lodge in Casla Connemara, which was once owned by the chairman of the line that ran the Titanic has failed to sell at public auction

However negotiations on its sale are now underway following its withdrawal from the auction in the Imperial Hotel in the city last evening

Only one out of the nine properties on offer sold at auction but three have since been sold and negotations continue on others

The auction was held by DNG Maxwell, Heaslip and Leonard auctioneers

UHG to become specialist centre in new hospital grouping

The Cabinet will sign off this morning on the re-organisation of the country’s hospitals into six regional groupings.

The Irish Independent reports that University Hospital Galway will act as specialist centre in a new grouping involving a total of seven hospitals.

Under the existing arrangement, the Galway Roscommon Hospital group includes UHG, Merlin Park, Portiuncula in Ballinasloe and Roscommon Hospitals.

The new grouping will see the inclusion of Sligo General Hospital and Letterkenny Hospital.
