Killian Brouder has assured Galway United fans that there will be no let-up from the side for the rest of the season, despite wrapping up the league title in Kerry last Friday night.

The Newcastle West native says that, while the squad is delighted to have clinched the title with a number of games to spare, the players are determined to protect their 100% home record . . . and there is the not insignificant matter of an FAI Cup semi-final with Bohemians on Saturday week.

“It is nice to get it done this early, at least we are still in the cup now so we still have something to be competitive for, it is not just a case of seeing out games for the rest of the season.

“There is always something to target, you want to go as far in a cup competition as possible, and we have made Eamonn Deacy Park a bit of a fortress, I think we have only conceded five goals here. We take pride in that, we know if we keep a clean sheet, we have a 99% chance of winning the game, we won’t take the foot off the pedal, we look forward to every game, we treat every game with respect and we’ll take every game with respect to each team,” says the central defender, who was brought to United by Alan Murphy in July 2019.

While he is enjoying the good times that come with a title win, Brouder’s early days at United was during the Project DNA season, when Murphy, as manager, had a miniscule budget to work off, leaving him trying to blood young local players earlier than they were ready to make the step-up to the national league.

Thise were uncomfortable times at United, which ended with Murphy – a true club legend, being the club’s all-time top scorer in the league – being let go in the summer of 2020, to be replaced a couple of weeks later by John Caulfield.
