The University of Galway and Galway City Council are in talks about how to progress multi-million-euro regeneration plans for Nuns’ Island.

The engagement between staff at both organisations comes following a joint application for millions under the European URDF (Urban Regeneration and Development Fund).

Members of the Governing Body of the university have been told that a total of €4.3m funding has been allocated for the initial planning phase of the project. This will be drawn down and used to pay for planning and design.

Home to the Poor Clare Monastery, from which the area got its name, Nuns’ Island is mostly a residential area, home also to St Joseph’s (the Bish) secondary school, Galway Arts Centre, and University of Galway buildings including many that have been vacant for years.

A spokesperson for the University of Galway this week said it would use the URDF monies for planning and design of the regeneration plan.
