Bill Maher welcomes new hospital group for west and north west

The CEO of the Galway and Roscommon hospital group says the announcement of a new hospital group for the region is good news for people in the west.

Bill Maher says the west/north west composition which includes UHG, Merlin Park, Portiuncula hospital , Sligo Regional, Letterkenny General, Mayo General and Roscommon general, will have autonomy to manage funding and staffing.

The academic partner for the group is NUI Galway.

In a statement, President of the University Jim Browne says the integration of teaching and research with clinical practice is a welcome development.

The Health Minister today unveiled plans to merge the country’s 49 hospitals into six groups.

They are west/north west, Dublin North East, Dublin Midlands, Dublin East, and Midwest.
