Big turnout at city hall protest over student accommodation complex in Westside

This article first appeared on Galway Bay FM

There was a big turnout at City Hall this afternoon for a protest over a planned student accommodation complex in Westside.

More than 60 people arrived shortly before 3pm, as a meeting of City Councillors was set to get underway.

In late 2022, despite a recommendation by Galway City Council that planning be refused, An Bord Pleanala gave the green light to the 240-bed complex on a section of carpark at Westside Shopping Centre.

But residents have vowed to continue fighting against it – and today they alleged that the conditions of planning permission are not being adhered to by the developer.

Chloe Nolan was there to bring us this report – and the first thing you’ll hear is clips of Councillors Eddie Hoare and Mike Cubbard speaking with the crowd.
