Mosaic artist Brenda Kennelly is exhibiting new work in Beneath our Feet at the KAVA community art gallery in Kinvara. The show runs from this Thursday, September 5 to Sunday, September 15.
Based in Ballyvaughan, Brenda has been making mosaics for many years and after a career in finance is finally satisfying her creative and artistic side.
Her mosaics are an intriguing combination of natural slate and stone, combined with glass, including vibrantly coloured smalti. Mainly self-taught, and taking guidance from other mosaic artists, she translates the form, movement and flow of the earth into mosaic wall-art.
A keen walker, she is inspired by the earth, land and sea, with the Burren and its dry-stone walls, karst landscape and hazel woods playing a role in inspiring her current work.
“The natural materials I use include slate, stone, shale and glass,” says Brenda. “Each piece of stone and glass is cleaned, cut and shaped, piece by piece, to bring texture, colour and flow to the mosaic.”
In Beneath our Feet, Brenda is inviting viewers to feel the emotions that are provoked by a connection with the earth.
The exhibition runs until Sunday, September 15, from 11am-5pm daily in the KAVA gallery and all are welcome. More information at www.brendakennelly.com.
