He’s currently starring Martin McDonagh’s Banshees of Inisherin – the Irish movie that the whole world seems to be talking about – but Jon Kenny’s own life has taken enough turns and twists over more than 40 years in the public eye to turn it into a movie all of its own.
Which is something he appears to be reluctantly acknowledging himself – because he quietly admits that one of his current projects is what he says others call his memoirs, but which he prefers to see as a dive into disparate memories of a life of many parts.
And what a varied life that has been; from his first incarnation with the Limerick band Gimik through his training as a ballet dancer, onto his original stand-up performances evolving into D’Unbelievables, serious dramatic roles – and then the occasional film role, like that part of Gerry, reuniting with his old sidekick Pat Shortt as Jonjo, in McDonagh’s acclaimed new release.
“Others call it a memoir,” he says. “To me, it’s just memories. But we’ll see where it goes. It could end up like a lot of other things that almost see the light – like the musical I nearly finished!”
If trying to encapsulate that career between the covers of one book wasn’t enough, he’s also writing a lot of poetry – and he’s currently working on a new play with Connemara-born, London-based playwright Brid Fitzpatrick that might be the exact opposite to his Inisherin role.
“It’s called the Brothers and, as a project, we’re really just at the second draft stage,” he says.
“This could be the exact opposite to the role in the Banshees, because while that’s about two lads who get along on everything, this is about two brothers who don’t talk to each other at all.”
