Issues of place, personality and inspiration are explored through the lens of six Irish poets in the award-winning documentary film, Fís na Fuiseoige (The Lark’s View), which will be screened in the city this Friday, September 27, at 6pm.

The screening, at the Pálás Cinema, is part of a conference on Irish language Literature and Culture, organised by the Irish Department at the University of Galway, which is taking place this weekend.  The theme of the conference is the sense of place in Irish language literature and culture, between old and new, academic and artistic.

Fís na Fuiseoige, which premiered at the 2026 Dublin Film Festival and went on to win awards in London and California, examines this issue.

Its director Aodh Ó Coileáin describes it as “a heady blend of heart and head”, as it celebrates the role of place in poetry from pagan Ireland, right through to the modern era.

“Fís na Fuiseoige affirms the Irish connection to the land and how this has informed our sensibility, sense of self and imagination,” he says.

Featuring poets Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill, Jackie Mac Donncha, Paddy Bushe, Biddy Jenkinson, Gearóid Mac Lochlainn and Cathal Ó Searcaigh, it was filmed over a year in Conamara, Wicklow, Cork, Belfast, different areas  of Kerry, and the Donegal Gaeltacht. It offers stunnign aerial views of the Irish landscape.

Contributors include Professor Máirín Ní Dhonnchadha, formerly of the Old Irish Department at the University of Galway, as well as Dr Louis de Paor of UG and Professor Declan Kiberd of UCD.

Seosamh Ó Cuaig, Darach Mac Con Iomaire, Maidhc Bruic, Máire Ní Chinnéide and Claire Ní Mhuirthile also contribute.

Seán Finnan of Film Ireland described Fís na Fuiseoige as a “beautifully intimate portrait of language and place”, saying it showcased the importance of the Irish language in the Gaelic Revival, which preceded the Irish revolution and acted as a catalyst for it.

Fís na Fuiseoige  is in Irish with English subtitles.

Its screening this Friday evening will include an introduction and a Q&A with director Aodh Ó Coileáin.
